An American Exile

1/25/05

“Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, with conquering limbs astride from land to land; here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command the air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.”

“Keep, ancient lands your stories pomp!” Cries she with silent lips.” Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Poet, Emma Lazarus d.1887 “The New Colossus” The poem inscribed on The Statue of Liberty.

There is a growing movement of self exiles in the United States. I know because I am one and have spoken to many other liberals and moderate conservatives who consider themselves cast adrift and disconnected from the new ideals and values of this country. False ideals have replaced pride of achievement of this nation in individual liberty and freedom. Grand ideals of a country that stood noble before the world because of our stable government and the diversity and industry of our population. In shame of error, ignorance and arrogance the United States eventually accepted it’s wrongs and strove to lead the world in the achievement of the ideals of freedom and liberty through the slow, steady, method of debate and committed resolve; but now our leaders are leading us and the world into the acceptance of hypocrisy, militarism and economic and moral bankruptcy.
