The Lost Spirit of Hope

flag

How long must we despair
in the poverty of our nation’s soul,
before we call upon the spirit of hope?

On the back streets of the United States
poverty is disguised and ignored
by local,state and federal government.

The poor, sick and homeless are voiceless.
Their screams are masked by sirens
as they are taken away in ambulances.

The jobless economy and endless wars
herd the poor and middle classes into military service
to fight and die for corporations and bankers.

America is no longer a great power,
proven to the world by its massive poverty,
hopeless indifference, and overcrowded prisons.
