SKIPPING BREAKFAST
7/29/08
Ever skip breakfast? I often do. I got up early in the morning last week , 4am to get to the radio station at 5:00 to work the board for a three hour remote. I found that my mind doesn’t work as well at 4 am as it does at 6am. I do my fm shows at 8-10pm on Tuesday nights and my internet shows on W,T,F nights at 8pm. The dog usually gets me up at 6am. I take him out , light up my first cigarette , while I get some fresh air, and walk the dog for my own exercise. These are habits that are tough to break, especially with a two hour time change. I don’t know how other people operate, but I can’t look at food at 4am, I can barely look at food at 6:am
I can’t remember the last time a jolt of adrenaline hit me at 5:00am . As I walked into the studio I suddenly got a rush of adrenaline , went over to the board and started to set up . The board is not state of the art, its been added on to several times . It’s one of those delicate instruments that is only delicate because of its age and temperament, it’s sturdy , but a little wobbly at the knees.
The remote equipment is a little cranky, and the weather wasn’t cooperating. The Talent were standing under a leaking tent, at 5:30am trying to figure out an out cord from an in cord, waiting for me to call them to connect. It was the first time this crew had been assembled together for a remote, and we weren’t sure where all of our heads were yet. It really turned out to be a “cluster fuck” as it was unanimously identified. Everything had gathered in place for the perfect storm. At 9:00am we went back to normal programming with audible sighs of relief.
By nine o’clock I felt like the Chinese guy in the Six Flags Roller Coaster commercial , who shouts out 1 flag! 6 Flags! MO FLAGS MO FUN!
The Remote was a four day event , by the fifth day the world was recreated. I didn’t eat until nearly one o’clock each day, except for 3 or 4 cups of black coffee distilled in tap water. By Saturday my stomach began to get very angry about its new feeding schedule and threatened a strike. Its only demand was that it had to have lunch no later than 1:00pm. Once I agreed to its demand my life became quite normal again. I realized that I was operating on adrenaline and caffeine for 4 days. I finished my 400… page book and sent to the editor trying to meet a two week late deadline. I got a new television show final edited and released today. It feels great being back to normal.
